2022, Mixed Media Installation

In both my own creative process and when studying works by other artists, I am often struck by the subtle yet profound ways in which different forms of art have impacted each other throughout history. Similar to what the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan notes in his “mirror stage theory,” art media can be different in form yet much the same in their artistic core, often making one the inspiration for others. Therefore, for this installation, instead of conventionally pairing texts with the typewriter, I set up pastel-drawn objects emerging from the typewriter’s interior. The design of deconstructing and reconstructing traditional components from everyday objects forms a comedic juxtaposition between two major art media: graphics and text. [Except for ready-made keycaps, all parts of this installation are handcrafted.]
