Book Cover Design:

For “The Collector” by John Fowles

2022, Printmaking

Reading the thriller novel “The Collector” in English class, I was inspired by how the female protagonist Miranda strives to regain freedom after the psychotic butterfly collector Frederick kidnaps her and holds her captive in his cellar. In my design for this book’s cover, the three-layer-shelf and butterflies in orderly glass jars imply Frederick’s identity as a collector, resonating with the book title. Amongst the butterfly specimens, one is replaced by a bowknot foreshadowing Miranda’s plight, and its tilted angle gives a tendency of motion, which symbolizes her awareness of fighting back. The title and author’s name are designed as piled wood blocks for a more integrated composition. In contrast, the unique texture of printmaking demonstrates a vintage and mottled sense as a perfect fit with the story’s sense of time.
