Packaging Design: Cassettes of Concern
2023, Mixed Media
Although mental illnesses have become common problems in teenaged communities, they are still not consistently recognized as worthy of serious treatment by parents. The lack of recognition for mental health issues can be symbolized by cassette tapes: with acoustic information recorded and rolled up as film inside the case, the cassette tape is a representation of concealment and repression. Noticing the juxtaposition between them, I redesigned tape packaging, each inspired by a mental illness, hoping to raise social concern. While similar colors are used on all five tapes for series unity, each is packaged with a different design and media corresponding to various symptoms. For example, “anxiety” is made of sharp acrylic plates, and “OCD” is a structure of regular squares.
