Evening Calm, Somewhere, Fireworks

2022, Acrylic on Canvas

It has always been a joy to cycle in the downtown area of Shanghai while listening to music from random playlists. One summer evening, I stopped my bike by a street corner, incidentally turning to look at the building beside me. I was amazed to find the subtle fit of the peaceful sunlit cityscape in the bustling air with the song playing in my earphones. Therefore, as a visual representation of the song “Evening Calm, Somewhere, Fireworks” by the Japanese rock band Yorushika, I recorded the scenery in a painting, portraying a street-corner building with shop windows and signs mirroring the afterglow. I use a limited palette of warm red-toned colors to recreate that moment’s dreamlike, placid impression.
