Death and a Sunflower

2021, Charcoal

This still-life drawing is based on a collection of found objects in my household, of which my selection is inspired by the poem “Ah! Sun-flower” by William Blake. I used the mirror as a symbol separating the two worlds: while outside is full of fragmented and worn objects, its reflection shows a more intact front. This image shows a difference between two worlds: death of the body and eternity of the spirit. The use of charcoal sets up a strong contrast between light and dark, and its rough mark-making also presents a blurry and undetermined mood, both corresponding to the severance between life and death. The distinct value difference of the diagonally-arranged lining cloth also emphasizes the theme.
