Bodhi in a Leaf

2022, Gouache

“To see a world in a wild flower, and a bodhi in a leaf.” Inspired by Eastern Buddhist thought, I began to see how commonplace landscapes could be interpreted with infinite possibilities. Thus, this series of paintings is a miniature study of the complexity and unpredictability found in natural objects, created based on my observations of a withering flower in my garden. Inspired by cartoonist Marc Antoine Mathieu’s design of storyboards, I continuously zoomed out my viewing distance from the first piece to the fourth, with the paintings transforming from abstract geometric shapes to a concrete flower. The design of consecutive magnification adds to a sense of pattern and rhythm; it also echoes the theme of how the perceived message can vary with different degrees of view.
