The final exhibition for IB Visual Arts. I’m often inspired by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s “mirror stage theory”: one’s identification with his own mirrored image, and so do objects. Therefore, the presented body of work serves as a multidimensional interpretation on the phenomenon “mirroring”, as in “showing reflection”, demonstrated literally and metaphorically. The process of mirroring is never limited to observing a shadow replicant; it’s a process where one constructs his ideal image based on his initial self-anticipation: what’s fundamentally reflected shall be the viewer’s cognitive patterns. Thus, even in the absence of literal reflectors, “mirroring” can be further generalized into a symbolic metaphor, penetrating into people’s daily interactions. Construction of self persists when viewers chronically look at others, rendering the broad concept of “mirroring” to be an ultimate essence portraying everyone’s existing world view. This certain series of works aims to reveal the aforesaid process so that the viewers can, personally and holistically, reflect on interpreting not only their own mirrored image but also how broader notions are involved in “mirroring”. Come find yourselves in these reflections.
